In summer, the reverse occurs. Extended daylight — particularly evening light — delays melatonin onset significantly. People feel alert later, feel less inclined toward their usual bedtime, and often find that their bodies are genuinely not ready for sleep until considerably later than their winter norm. This is not laziness or a lifestyle choice; it is the circadian system responding precisely as it was designed to respond.

Why Partners Are Affected Differently

The same seasonal light environment does not produce the same response in both partners. Chronotype has a genetic component that determines how sensitively the circadian clock responds to light cues. Morning-type people — whose clocks tend to run slightly fast — generally show more dramatic seasonal shifts than evening types. Their melatonin production advances more in winter and delays more in summer, producing a seasonal swing in sleep timing that their evening-type partner may not experience to the same degree.

Temperature: The Second Seasonal Signal

Four Ways Couples Can Adapt With the Seasons

Manage evening light exposure as a team. A brief shared walk within an hour of waking — even on grey, overcast mornings, where outdoor light still outperforms indoor artificial light — is one of the most effective ways to maintain circadian alignment across the dark months.
